Types of Questions Asked In An Interview

Remember that shyness and timidity are signs of weakness. Try your best to turn the question round to your advantage. Your answers may have an intelligent lead. Like, if you are asked about having done something, you may answer that though you have not done that you have done this. It goes without saying that everyone gets caught now and then with a totally unexpected or awkward question. If you are unable to give an answer to such a question, you must plainly tell it that you had not expected to be asked a question of this kind.

Do not worry about your accent. It is worth mentioning that careless speech will certainly go against you. Your answers should be simple and reflect your good grasp of the facts. You must always avoid giving lengthy answers. Try your best to give illustrations from your experience in order to support your answers.

At the start of an interview the candidate is asked simple questions with the sole intention of putting him at ease. Here the candidate must be brief while giving answers. The interviewer is not interested in a detailed answer from the candidate. Later the candidate is drawn out in order to get him into regular level of speaking.


He may be asked questions on issues that he would not be comfortable with. Here the candidate must not take the questions lightly. He will have to speak a little more. Here the interviewer is judging his positive thinking, logic, orderly flow of thought, communication skills, etc. Answers to such questions need prior and proper planning and preparation.

Only then will a candidate be able to highlight the positive aspects of his experiences in a logical and effective manner. In asking questions it is important for the organisation that even if a candidate is not offered the job he should not go away with a feeling of unfair treatment. When giving answers a candidate should ask whether he can add anything more.

It should be borne in mind that the questions themselves can be put in different ways. The conversation will flow as one question leads naturally to another. The types of question that are generally used during an interview are:

Open questions

They get maximum information from the candidate and his knowledge of the subject. The normally asked questions are about himself, his achievements, his ambitions etc. Such a question gives the candidate an opportunity to amplify. A question of this kind requires a detailed answer.


Closed questions

They can be answered with Yes or No in a single sentence.

Compound OR multiple questions

These are several questions framed in one sentence. Here the interviewer wants to test the candidate’s memory and concentration. Like, the candidate’s last job, how it compares with the post of interview and what attracts him to this post.

Hypothetical questions

They test a candidate’s analytical ability – how he would act in certain situations. The principal purpose is to find out how you work and what types of things you take into account when solving problems. Such questions are asked when the job demands initiative and there is some element of judgement.

Leading questions

They help the candidate with suggestive answers. This is often done with a statement followed by expressions such as Do not you…


It is very important for a candidate to understand how a question is worded. This will enable him to understand its purpose and that would mean half the battle is won. Know it for certain that interviewers are always looking for contradictions in what you say. They want to know why you choose this organisation, job and what you can do for them. It is a practice to ask all the candidates the same kinds of question. That helps in comparison.
