Why did you study certain subjects at school/college?

The candidate should explain that that particular subject or course of study is what absolutely interests him. And he wanted to go on for employment in the same field/subject he chose. In case of a course in non-vocational studies, the candidate should try to show that he is capable of interests in a wide range of subjects and would be able to bring the same enthusiasm to his work. He can also say that learning any subject successfully enables him to learn new skills quickly. It also makes him better able to handle the unfamiliar skills that may come up as part of his job.

Why does the candidate consider himself best suited for the job?

The answer to such a question should be tailor-made in order to suit the needs of the organisation. The employer is interested to know whether the candidate possesses the requisite skills, knowledge, attitudes, experience and so on for the job. Therefore the candidate should be thoroughly familiar with various requirements of the job to answer the question well.

Most private companies and to a great extent govt/public sector companies these days put service bond as a condition to the selected candidate. Here the organisation’s point of view is that for certain jobs the organisation plans to invest a large amount of money in long training programmes during which the employee will not be engaged in a productive capacity. The total amount spent thus would be lost if the selected candidate leaves before the bond period is over without giving the minimum output imparted to him through the training programme.

How much do you expect as salary?

This is undoubtedly a very sensitive question. Usually the govt organisations have their fixed pay scale and structure before them and the need for such a question does not arise. But for private companies it is a prerequisite where it is stated that the salary is subject to negotiations. In such cases a candidate should go for about 25% increase in the salary that he is getting in his present job. Which would be reasonable. Never make a point to answer that you shall accept whatever the company offers. It will put you in a bad light indicating that you are seeking employment merely for job’s sake.

Do you accept transferability in postings?

The question of mobility becomes crucial because in some cases people are not at all willing to move out of a chosen place which may be his hometown. However, there is nothing wrong in accepting transferability in a job.

How do you spend your leisure time?

This is a loaded question, which will say a lot about your personality. If you take part in a sport which does not include group participation, you are likely to be treated as a loner not interested in mixing well with people. In case you paint, read, cook or simply listen to music or TV you are likely to be creative and a loner. Games such as football, cricket etc show you are a team member and you possess ability to get along with people.

It is very important to note that nothing is wrong with any of the said hobbies. It only suggests your possible nature and may have a bearing on the kind of job. Jobs such as research work and accountancy which require minimum interaction with people may look for the loner. Whereas jobs such as welfare, sales and public relations require a high degree of group interaction and team spirit.

Why are you interested to join this job, which is not a bed of roses?

In order to find out your interest in the organisation, the interviewers paint a gloomy picture of the job. In such cases the candidate should show his interest, keenness and enthusiasm about the job. He must not be frightened by the sorry picture cut by the interviewer. It is only a trap and the candidate must not fall into it. The candidate may phrase his reply with – every organisation has its plus and minus points. After taking them into consideration I have found that the strength of this job far outweighs the weaknesses. I am convinced that this job offers me the opportunity to contribute whatever I have learnt and bring out the best in me.

A candidate while talking about his successes and failures must try to strike balance. While talking about his past failures he should be honest about his mistakes. But he must add that he has learnt from them.

What are your ambitions?

The main purpose of this question is to find out whether the candidate will stay with the organisation, whether he is interested in the job or career genuinely.
